Tripura to conduct mass tests in Agartala municipality as Covid cases rise
The Tripura government has decided to carry out a mass testing campaign in the Agartala Municipal Society (AMC) from May 30 following a rapid increase in Covid-19 cases in areas of the society.
The city of Agartala and the West Tripura district as a whole have had the highest share of all Covid cases in Tripura in recent weeks.
Out of a total of 783 cases of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, 378 cases have been reported in West Tripura district. A total of 13 patients also died during the period – the highest single-day death rate to date.
“We made the decision after seeing the high positivity rate in CMA. Also, some people are not interested in taking tests. We plan to complete the trials in all 49 wards within a month, unless there is an increase in cases, ”Sadar’s sub-division magistrate Asim Saha told media. He added that the administration hopes to get a clear picture of the positive cases after the campaign.
Twelve teams would be formed, comprising stand-level officers and social activists in addition to health and ASHA workers. According to the plan, at least one person in a family will be selected for the test. If someone tests positive for Covid-19, then everyone in their family should be tested, he added.
Meanwhile, at least 96 percent of frontline workers, including health workers, have been vaccinated, official records show.
According to the Covid State Control Room, the last 24 hours have witnessed 110 positive cases in the South District, followed by 73 in Unakoti, 62 in Gomati, 50 in the North District, 44 in Dhalai, 38 in Sepahijala and 28 in Khowai.
