How to Find, View, and Create Steam Guides


Steam Guides are player-created manuals that can help you uncover game secrets, teach you how to modify games, provide fun facts, and more.

In this article, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about Steam guides, including what they are, how to find them, how to view them, and how to create your own.

What are Steam Guides?

Are you stuck in a game and need a walkthrough? Looking for all the achievements and want to know how to get them? Looking for pro level tactics? Want to know how to configure and remap your controller?

Steam guides offer all of this and more. These are free resources created by players that provide support on a game.

Guides can contain text, screenshots, and videos, and can be divided into categories so you can quickly jump to the section you need.

While in the past you may have searched online for a walkthrough or purchased a strategy guide, now it’s likely someone has written a Steam guide that will help you out.

And if they haven’t, it’s easy to create your own Steam guide.

How to find a Steam guide

There are different ways to experience Steam guides, and you don’t need to own a game to view its guides. Here’s how to find Steam guides.

To view all guides:

Steam community guides

  1. Open the Steam client.

  2. Click on Community.

  3. Switch to the Guides tongue. You can sort this by The most popular and Most recent.

This is good if you want to get a feel for the guides, but there’s a good chance you want to read one for a specific game.

To find guides for a game you don’t own:

  1. Open the Steam client.

  2. Click on Store.

  3. Go to a game page.

  4. At the top right, click Community Center.

  5. Switch to the Guides tongue.

Otherwise, if you already own the game:

  1. Open the Steam client.

  2. Click on Library.

  3. Select a game.

  4. Click on Guides.

Finally, there is an even easier route if you are already playing the game through Steam:

  1. Launch a Steam game.

  2. Open the Steam overlay. By default it is Shift + Tab.

  3. Here there is a Guides section that shows the top rated guides, which you can click to view.

  4. Otherwise, click See all guides to browse all guides for the game you are playing.

This method only applies to games purchased or redeemed through Steam, rather than non-Steam games that you have added to the client.

When viewing a guide, use the Guide index on the right to jump to specific parts.

How to create a Steam guide

If you want to help your fellow gamers and share your expertise, you need to create a Steam guide.

Basic Steam Guide Information

  1. Navigate to the Game Guides page, as detailed above.

  2. In the right menu, click Create a guide.

  3. Enter the Title for your guide.

  4. Click on Choose file to upload a square image to represent your guide. It must be at least 195×195 pixels.

  5. Enter a The description for your guide. You can use markup texts for formatting: click Formatting help to see the available options.

  6. Assign your guide a Category (you can select more than one) and Tongue.

  7. Check that you are the original creator of the guide, or have permission to publish it.

  8. Click on Save and continue.

This will take you to the next page, where you fill out the content for your guide. You can always edit it later, although you need to at least have some content in place before you can post.

To complete your guide, on the Guide content page:

  1. Add all Pictures that you want to use in your guide. You can also use screenshots or videos that you have already uploaded to Steam.

  2. Add contributor if you want your friends to help you create the guide. It will appear on their Guides page once you complete the setup.
  3. Add a section to create your first section of the guide. A table of contents will be automatically generated from it.
  4. Click on Edit this section.

  5. Here, define a Title section and enter it Content of the sections. Use the toolbar to apply formatting and use the right menu to embed images and videos.

  6. When you are ready, click to save.

  7. Repeat steps three through six as needed. You can drag and drop sections to rearrange them. Click on Delete this section to delete it and the content inside entirely.

  8. When you are finished, click Preview Guide. This will show you how the guide will appear when published.

  9. When you are happy to make the guide public, click Publishing Guide.

You can return to your guide at any time. To do this, go to the Guides page and you will see a new link in the right menu called Guides you created.

Once the guide is online, under Owner controls, you can Change visibility to define who can see the guide: public, friends only, hidden or unlisted. You can also go back to the different edit pages and turn off comments, and Author statistics shows you how many people have viewed and favorite your guide (of course, those numbers can take a while to grow).

You can also Remove the guide if you want to permanently remove it from Steam. It cannot be reversed, so save the guide somewhere else if you want to keep track of it.
