Fuengirola City Hall has announced that the winner of the competition to decide on the design of the city’s new theater has been won by architect Cristóbal Pérez, whose “ambitious” proposal will use sustainable and energy-efficient materials.

The design of the new theater and cultural centre, which obtained 87 points out of a possible 100, beat competition from four other architects.

The building, which will be designed with materials such as GRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete), will consist of five floors and will include a 400-seat theater, which can be divided into two auditoriums, as well as exhibition halls , classrooms and common areas. It will be built on a 1,300 square meter plot where the city museum is currently located.

The jury in charge of the selection process was made up of several municipal architects, the dean of the Official College of Architects of Malaga and members of the town hall.

Cutting-edge design

The city’s mayor, Ana Mula, said that after the final structural planning is given the green light, the project will be launched and the new theater will become a reality.

“It’s an ambitious, avant-garde design that adheres to the iconic style we were looking for and fits perfectly with the dynamic image of New Fuengirola. Soon we will have one more space in our city to host more cultural performances and where we can continue to train our residents in a multitude of artistic disciplines,” Mula said.
