Covid-19: Assam bans cultural functions, schools’ participation in R-Day celebrations

Assam’s government on Friday banned all cultural programs, award ceremonies and participation of school children in the ensuing Republic Day celebrations in the state due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Issuing an order, Chief Secretary Jishnu Barua said the Republic Day program would be limited to the hoisting of the national flag, the speech of the guest of honor and the ceremonial parade only.

”Other activities like cultural programs, awards, distribution of prizes are to be avoided. The pre and post Republic Day schedule can be avoided given the prevailing Covid situation in the state,’ he added.

There will be no involvement of school children in the ceremonial parade or parade, the order issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.

“The gathering for the Republic Day program may be limited to a maximum of 1,000 for the state-level function in Kamrup (subway) district, 500 for the district-level function and 200 for any another level,” he added.

The order signed by Barua also stated that only trained police officers, security personnel and home guards, who are fully vaccinated, would be allowed to participate in the ceremonial parade and parade.
